Eckhart Tolle is a mentor I refer back to time and again. The spiritual teacher is the author of the book The Power of Now, and A New Earth, Awaken to Your Life’s Purpose. Both books have changed my life. I recommend you read both.
Eckhart’s website, EckhartTollleTV.com, has hundreds of videos discussing life, spirituality, and human behavior. Topics range from how to handle success, difficult relationships, and coping with anxiety and stress.
I just watched an episode, which he discusses the difference between overcoming challenges versus transcending them.
It’s a unique topic. Our society, especially Western society, has a tendency to strive for success at all costs. The credo goes something like this: We must become successful, accomplish a certain level of income or status within in society. We must overcome any challenge, pitfall or struggle along the way, to achieve our goal.
As a result, we get bogged down with negative thoughts that go like this, “oh no, not another challenge,” or “life it too difficult,” or “I’m sick of everything being such a pain.”
Eckhart points out, “Every person on Earth is challenged in some way, and most people think there is something wrong with this. But this should not be.”
He continues, “The first thing is accepting life is difficult. We must fully, and whole-heartedly admit this. Life being difficult is a universal truth, and not an aberration.” For any individual–whether it’s surviving everyday life, or a high achieving person trying to climb the ladder in a career—along the way, we will feel pain or be challenged to survive, or to grow.
Eckhart emphasized just by realizing times will be difficult, and not resisting it, is the key in making strides in growing, and overcoming these challenges.
So remember the first step in overcoming challenges: Accept and don’t resist. Understand life is difficult. And that’s ok. Once we are at peace with this, the ironic thing is, life becomes less difficult. Life will then transform from a challenge, into a joy.
