Meditation is something I’ve done over the last few years, but on a very sporadic basis.
Over the last few weeks I’ve been meditating consistently, and I’m started to build the habit. The results have been very good.
I’ve felt a sense of calm and peace throughout my day. When feeling pressured, or busy, I’ve been able to stop. Then ground myself, and take a few breaths. I’ve also been able to focus better on my tasks at hand. I’ve been doing things one at a time. I’ve felt more in control, and as a result, less stressed.
A few days ago, I came across a powerful blog post and video about 23 different ways to cleanse your body, painlessly. Meditation was one of the topics. Here’s the resource:

Author, Drew Canole, shared a diagram about the benefits of meditation. Here is the eye opening list of benefits:
-Fights depression
-Fights anxiety
-Fights memory loss
-Fights post traumatic stress disorder
-Improves academic performance
-Helps regulate emotions
-Reduces heart disease risk
-Improves sleep
-Lessens cold and flu effects
-Fights chronic pain
Here are 5 tips and realizations that have worked for me when meditating:
1. Focus on Your Breath: Your breath is your first focal point. As Drew states in his video, focusing on your breath, and breathing deeply has incredible effects on cleansing your body. Try breathing in for 5 seconds, holding your breath for 5 seconds, and then exhaling for 5 seconds. However is most comfortable for you is most important. The concentrated oxygen into your body, is vitalizing.
2. Meditation is imperfect: It’s ALWAYS imperfect. Don’t be hard on yourself if you can’t stop your mind from thinking. Let thoughts come, and let them go. Just by sitting up straight and taking slow deep breaths, will do wonders for your body and mind.
3. Incorporate soothing music/soothing sounds: The Calm App is a great app to use to listen to calm sounds, and have a guided voice to help you. You will also enjoy listening to the “Calm Meditation” Station on Pandora. Also, “Alpha Waves,” is music specifically designed to help the mind relax and focus. You can watch “Alpha Wave” videos on youtube.
4. Put your hands on your naval and focus on your hands: Open your eyes and look at your hands. Breath. Try to feel any sensations in your hands. Try to feel every cell in your hands or the blood flowing through your hands. This focused attention on your hands will help calm your mind, feel your inner body, and get you in that meditative state of consciousness.
5. Seek a guided meditation class: They are very helpful. A meditation teacher can help guide your breathing and your mind when you are starting out.
