Day Momo (Des Moments) August 1st-15th
Over the last year, I’ve been visiting a homeless shelter in Miami.
I help out in the kitchen, and play basketball or chess in the courtyard with the residents.
Yesterday, I decided to give my chess set away (I’ve never used it, it just collects dust in my apt). I brought it to the shelter and gave it to a guy named Cato, whom I’ve been playing with the last few weeks.
He genuinely thanked me, and we went on to play 5 games together (I lost 3-2 in a close match).
As I got up to leave, Cato stopped me, looked me in eye, and said, “Thank you for the chess set man, it’s a great gift, you know something crazy? Today is my birthday.”
A good reminder that you never know how big an impact you can have on someone with just the smallest gesture…
