The best investment to deal with fear. Maybe, it’s the best investment I’ve ever made in my life.
This investment has gotten me to where I am today. To New York. I didn’t know what this investment was at the time. Now looking back, it’s clear.
Uncertainty.
Uncertainty has been the best investment I ever made.
I share all of my fears in day 28. I don’t hold back. Everything that’s stopped me in the past, everything I’m still afraid of today, everything I have to painfully deal with on this adventure.
Investing, and trusting in uncertainty has been my coping mechanism for fear.
When I was 24, I moved to Florida to start a real estate company. I left a very good life in Connecticut, with a extraordinary company. I was in at the ground level, soaring up the ladder. They moved to sunny San Diego, and I had the keys to the castle at my fingertips.
Logically, it made no sense to move to Florida. I knew no one, the market was crashing. I did not have much capital, and cared more about my social life and partying. Quite frankly it was stupid. I admit that.
Maybe part of investing in uncertainty, is investing in your stupidity sometimes too. This was a highly uncertain road, with a very low win-rate.
As predicted by percentages, I failed. After 10 months I was dead broke, making no money as a business owner.
However, the uncertainty I invested in had a plan for me.
I met a mentor, my next employer who took me under his wing. I worked under him for 6 years. I made good money. I grew as a person. I developed my skills.
I invested heavily into uncertainty again. I left my 2nd job in 11 years, and decided to travel around world and write.
If I let fear win, and didn’t invest in uncertainty, I wouldn’t be where I am. I wouldn’t have traveled through South America for 7 months. I would not be in New York City doing what I love.
The fear is still there. I can’t fight the fear. I can’t beat the fear.
But I can live with the fear. I can dance with it.
The only way to live with it, is by investing in some uncertainty in your life. Once you invest in it, you can embrace it. You can be ok with uncertainty.
This allows me to step aside when fear comes. It’s passes by.
The Tao Te Ching says, “Give evil nothing to oppose, and it will disappear by itself.”
Give fear nothing to oppose, through trusting uncertainty, and it will also disappear by itself.
It will at least leave my apartment and hang out in the hallway for a little while.
Thank you DA!! Very well said! I love that phrase, “everyone is gifted, and few open their presents!” I agree with you Dennis, the habit of self improvement is one that opens up your world and doors in our lives!! It certainly has for me, as for you. Be well my friend!!
