I feel inspired in New York. More than living in the suburbs of New Jersey. More than when I was backpacking through South America. It’s not that the suburbs are bad place to live, or that backpacking through South America is not inspirational.
New York just has this hustle vibe like no where else. Every coffee shop I walk past, there are at least 5 people digging in, working hard on their project, their art, their manifestation.
I get dialed in. It pushes me to do more, to produce more, to try more, to risk more. To raise my standard of output.
It makes me think – just produce it. Just get it out there and roll with the punches, the rejections, the projected raised eyebrow, the uncertainty in myself. That’s what other people are doing. They are getting shit done in New York.
There’s another motivating factor. If you don’t get it done, New York will kick you out quickly. It’s not cheap to live here. This wakes me up into action.
For the last 11 months, I’ve been on a strict, cheap budget. $1500-$1800 per month. Living in New York, I’m going way over that. The inspiration is worth every dollar.
Something I’ve talked about for years with my friends, and mentors, remains true and constant:
Environment is stronger than will power.
Friends are your environment. Living situation is your environment. Place of work is your environment.
I talk a lot about my internal state of consciousness. How to get your internal mind to accept and surrender to things in order to get out of a funk. To meditate, and slow down your thoughts to awaken your creative voice. Truth is, as much as that helps, sometimes it doesn’t work.
Sometimes in order to get out of feeling externally stuck, the best thing to do is to change your external environment to place that can ignite you.
Close friends who give real feedback and call my bullshit help me with my external situations. Likewise, moving to New York City has excited me again about new experiences to document and fresh writing projects to pursue.
Environment is stronger than will power.
P.S. Now the only challenge is the environment of the NYC bar scene 😉
Joey I read this everyday! I want to read your friends comments and see if discussions develop. How do I do that?
