I sent a text to my friend, “I’m moving to the city.” He text back: “You’re going to love the city, and the city will love you.”
I do love New York City. I love getting lost in the complexity. I love searching for the simplicity. I love the chaos. I love finding the peaceful pockets within the chaos. I love reading, writing, and running in the city.
What’s the first way I show my love to New York?
I show my gratitude.
Every morning, I write down 5 things I’m grateful for. Most days, my entries have something to do with New York. An experience in New York. Spending time with people I care about in New York. Having the opportunity to live here for 30 days.
What’s the second way I show my love to New York?
I smile and say hello.
An author I enjoy, Jack Kerouac once said, “Sociability is a big smile, and a big smile is nothing but teeth.”
So that’s what I do. I show my teeth. I say hello. I try to be social. I meet new people. I have a new conversation. I make a new friend. Sometimes I don’t.
I heard my neighbors outside the door. I walked into the hall. I showed my teeth and said hello. They invited me to breakfast the next day. They invited other friends. I made some new ones.
The city is life, and this is true in life: Gratitude is the foundation for a good life. Also, you can’t receive what you don’t give.
You might feel like you are lacking in an area of your life, I know I do sometimes. So here’s what you, and I can do. We can do at least one, if not both of these things:
- Start feeling gratitude for things you DO have. If you have nothing, be grateful you have no clutter in your life. Be grateful for the sun outside, or the rain. You can find something. Gratitude is the seed of abundance.
- Whatever you feel is lacking in your life start giving it to others. Even if the only thing you can give is a big smile. It’s nothing but teeth.
I’m trying to play my part. I’m giving my love. New York is loving me in return.
