I’ve been listening to an excellent audio book called The Essence of Success by Earl Nightengale. Earl is a pioneer in the personal development world, and was known as the “Dean of Development.”
He shares a conversation with his very good friend, Dr. Maxwell Maltz, author of the well-known book, Psycho-Cybernetics.
During a conversation Earl with Dr. Maltz, Earl asked how people can improve their self-image?
Dr. Maltz gave Earl a few points on the topic. Earl took some notes, and shared the 4 things Dr. Maltz discussed on improving one’s self image:
1. Forgive others; with no strings attached. Clean the slate, really clean the slate with any grudges, resentments, or disappointments you’re holding on to with other people.
2. Forgive yourself; “see yourself with kind eyes,” as Earl puts it. Clean the slate, of anything you regret from the past. Things you’ve done, mistakes you’ve made, embarrassments you’ve endured.
3. See yourself at your best; visualize yourself currently having the qualities of a life you desire. Act as if your prayers, dreams, and wishes have already been answered.
4. Keep up with yourself; not with others. You are going to be faster than some people. You will be slower than others. Each persons’ pace in life is different. As Earl states, “Forget the Jones’ and don’t feel guilty about moving ahead of some of your contemporaries. Keep up with yourself, and only yourself.”
