Goals and outcomes are something we all have. But do we always meet them? A lot of times the answer is no. Why is that?
Sometimes we procrastinate, make excuses, and let other things in our life get in the way of what we originally intended to accomplish.
How do you we solve this problem of lack of performance and execution?
Answer: Start an accountability group of 3 or 4 people.
Since Thanksgiving of 2012 I’ve been part a group of 4 people holding each other accountable to our outcomes we make each week.
This group has dynamically increased my performance, and follow-through in all areas of my life. Each Sunday night, we write out our outcomes to pursue for the week. Then the following Sunday Night we report back to each person in a group email how we did in completing those outcomes or goals.
If we do not complete a goal we have a penalty of a chosen amount of money that we keep track of on a spreadsheet. We now have skin in the game! (Please comment if you have another analogy for “skin in the game” – I couldn’t think of one)
Here are the biggest things I have gotten from being part of this Accountability group over the last 10 months:
1. The ideas and creativity we get from other people’s goals. Our group is almost like a weekly mastermind. We shares goals and ideas within the group that inspire me to add similar goals, or take on similar challenges in my life. Also someone’s goal might just create a fire for someone else to do something that was slumbering within our minds.
2. Trackable progress – This group is the bridge between daily/weekly tasks and monthly/yearly goals. This group helps solidify that our weekly goals are in direct correlation with our long term visions. And on the other end spectrum – making sure our daily tasks will lead to our weekly outcomes getting done. How can you expect to hit a YEARLY GOAL, if you cannot complete a monthly, weekly, or daily goal? This club is the GLUE that bridges DAILY TASKS to YEARLY GOALS and LONG TERM VISIONS.
3. Integrity is built by doing what you say you are going to do. LIVING OUR WORD. The more we do this we are subconsciously building integrity and character. And if we don’t hit our outcome for the week, we must own up to it. That’s an important part of integrity. No one is perfect, and some goals will not be accomplished in a timely manner. But what’s important is not withholding that fact. Own up to it, and get it done next week, or create a different outcome. And you’ll instantly feel better about moving forward.
Goals and dreams are crucial. But so is discipline and scalable steps to reach our goals and dreams. This group helps make that happen.
So what are you waiting for? Talk to 3 or 4 of your close friends and start an Accountability Club!
The Time Is Now.
