A couple of nights ago I went to see the movie Wolverine.
I was thinking to myself, what life lesson could I derive from a super-hero movie?
The Wolverine has super human powers, and uses these powers to protect others and conquer evil. His strength, power, and abilities are used for the good and protection of the World.
However, in spite of his heroic and righteous acts, the Wolverine still suffers incredible pain. The pain comes from one thing: the past. Now, granted, the Wolverine cannot die, so he has a very long past, but that’s beside the point. He suffers from the loss of a loved one, and continues to have nightmares every night because of her.
Then I thought about other superhero movies. There is some kind of loss or suffering these heroes face, and it truly affects them emotionally, as they dwell on it. I think of Batman. Batman suffered many losses. The biggest: the loss of his parents during his early childhood.
The message is these superheroes and super-humans, are still human. They feel pain and grief at times, along with the moments of exaltation, celebration, and victory.
Then I read a quote from Batman:
“It’s not the moments of tragedy that define our lives, so much as the choices we make to deal with them.”
It’s a good reminder as human beings that this is part of life. We all have set backs. The past may not be perfect, but the past does not define us. It’s the choices we make in the present moment in response to the past. It’s how we interpret events in our lives that truly define us.
It’s important to realize past events will hurt. This is part of the realness of life, but we have the power to overcome, and dissolve the past by being completely present here and now. Here and now there are no problems, and this dissolves the pain from the past.
The Time Is Now.
